Although asbestos isn’t used anymore, there are still millions of homes and commercial buildings that house this extremely dangerous material. Those most at risk are tradespeople who are frequently exposed during construction projects.
Up to twenty tradespeople a week are diagnosed with asbestos-related conditions, although it can take up to four decades for symptoms to occur. This means that many people who worked in the construction industry years ago are only just beginning to understand the full effect of their exposure to asbestos.
The British Lung Foundation cites asbestos as one of the primary contributors towards:
This is a type of cancer that affects the lining within the chest and abdomen known as the ‘mesothelium’. This incurable disease can be caused even by low levels of exposure to asbestos if these are repeated over time.
Asbestos Related Lung Cancer
This cancer develops inside the tubes that let air travel in and out of the lungs. It can then grow further inside the lung and spread to the rest of the body.
This condition mainly affects people who have had extensive exposure to asbestos. It is a type of scarring inside the lungs which causes them to shrink, resulting in breathlessness in sufferers.
Pleural Thickening
Similarly to asbestosis, pleural thickening refers to the scarring of the lining of the lung, known as the pleura, and causes thickening and swelling. The lung is therefore squeezed and can cause serious breathing problems and discomfort.
